What to Expect in Trump’s First 100 Days

Months ago, news emerged that Trump’s allies had been preparing a set of orders to be signed to advance his agenda from day one. There is a strong chance that Trump’s administration will control the trifecta, allowing him to act with minimal opposition.

If they gain control, tax cuts are expected soon, as promised. Trump’s well-known line, “Drill, baby, drill,” may also become a reality, as he aims to expedite Federal drilling permits, pending pipeline projects, and offshore drilling rights, and to re-exit climate accords. In other words, one of his immediate priorities would be to lower energy costs and bring back drilling jobs to the U.S.

In immigration, Trump is likely to launch what he describes as the largest deportation program to remove undocumented immigrants and reinforce the borders. His plan for deterring future illegal immigration involves creating a “buffer zone” in Mexico. Called the “remain in Mexico program,” this initiative would require asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their applications are processed. However, this strategy depends on Mexico’s cooperation, which Trump plans to secure by increasing tariffs and tightening economic measures until Mexico complies.

On a positive note in foreign relations, Putin has praised Trump’s actions following the recent assassination attempt on his life. Putin also expressed interest in Trump’s efforts to amend the Ukraine situation and re-establish relations with Russia, congratulating Trump on his electoral victory. This could signal a potential de-escalation in the Ukraine conflict.

Is Democracy at Stake with the Transition of Power?

Concerns about American democracy have surfaced, with fears about the impact of Trump’s actions on democratic norms. However, Biden has pledged a peaceful transition to Trump, emphasizing in a unifying speech that election results must be respected. He underscored the need for Americans to support their country regardless of political outcomes, reinforcing the stability of democratic institutions amid the leadership change.
